The Zoo
I recently attended the Fort Worth Zoo for the first time. This was something I had been wanting to do for the past three and a half years I have attended school at TCU. Especially, since it is located right down the street from campus. I found myself having a spare moment where I wasn’t consumed by classes or school work, and it just so happened to correlate with my mother coming into town for the annual tree lighting ceremony. The air was a bit chilly and crisp in the morning as we enjoyed our coffee together on the Trinity River Trail. This is when we looked across the river and noticed the zoo. Spontaneously, we made our way over, not knowing what we were about to experience.

As we approached the zoo entrance, the vibrant colors of the entrance gate greeted us. The ticket vendor handed us our tickets with a warm smile, and we eagerly entered the magical world of wildlife. The cacophony of children's laughter mixed with the distant roars and chirps of animals echoed through the air. Our first stop was the gorillas along with the other primates. We watched in awe as the monkeys swung from branch to branch and knuckle walked around, meticulously peeling the apple and orange pieces spread around their enclosure.

Next, we found ourselves in the African Savanna. First up was the giraffe enclosure. Towering above us, the gentle giants gracefully reached for leaves and hay, their long necks bending with elegance. The rhinos slept in the sun almost as if made of stone, a sharp contrast to the scuttle of the meerkats. The elephants majestically made their way to the water, stopping to take a long drink. As we approached the lion enclosure, one regal cat lounged lazily in the sun, their golden fur glowing. It let out a slight roar, and although not fully powered, this sound still reverberated with a deep intensity.

Finally, we headed to the reptile house. Snakes, lizards, and turtles fascinated us with their diverse shapes and sizes. The slithering snakes captured our attention with their hypnotic movements, and we left with a newfound respect for these often-misunderstood creatures.

Exhausted but elated, we reflected on the incredible day filled with laughter, discovery, and a renewed connection with the wonders of the animal kingdom. The zoo had been a portal to another world, and as we left, we carried with us cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.
